One of the best family games you can buy is Apples to Apples Party Box – The Game of Hilarious Comparisons. This game is great fun for four to ten players. It’s very easy to play and doesn’t have a lot of complicated rules. Basically, you deal the cards and you’re ready for a fun-filled game.
Apples to Apples is played with two decks of cards. The red deck is distributed to the players. Each player receives seven cards. These are nouns such as “George Washington” or “Pyramids” or “Pushups.” One player acts as judge and turns over a card from the green deck. The green deck contains descriptor cards such as “honest” or “ancient” or “exhausting.” Then the players must select a card from their hand which best matches the card turned over by the judge. The judge decides which card best aligns with the green card he/she has turned over in that round.
Judging is subjective, and based entirely on the criteria of the judge. Players can lobby why their answers should win, or why another players answer is valid or not. As the game is played, players will learn what each judge is looking for. This can be the most logical answer, or the most hilarious answer… Whatever he or she decides. The judge is assigned at the beginning of each round which makes the game more interesting as the criteria for the best match for each round is constantly changing.
Apples to Apples can be played by children and adults alike. Apples to Apples has a wide audience, but we have found that teen boys, for the most part, would rather play with other things. If you are looking for gifts for teen boys, you may want to consider Spy Net toys. But for most everyone else, Apple to Apple is a great suggestion. The game has many permutations, and with different players, it becomes a different game every time you play it. It can serve as an ice breaker for new friends, it provides a great way to get to know people. It is enjoyed by adults, and college students, and families. Children love it too.
The Party Box contains the expansion pack of cards, for even more inspiration. There is also a version available for the younger set, Apples to Apples Junior. If you don’t have it already, you’ll want to buy Apples to Apples for Christmas this year.
